The society’s purpose is to educate the members on the use of  Hosta in landscaping; hybridizing; propagating; growing Hosta in containers; care; maintenance; sharing of hosta plants; and gardening ideas.

As the Green Bay Botanical Garden continues to expand, the Green & Gold Hosta Society is very actively involved in maintaining an area for showcasing hostas. The Green & Gold Hosta Society’s Hosta Garden is prominently located near the entrance to the Green Bay Botanical Garden’s Visitor Center.

As part of its continuing promotion of the Genus Hosta, the Green & Gold Hosta Society of Northeast Wisconsin was proud to sponsor the Green Bay Botanical Garden’s quest to become an American Hosta Society National Display Garden. In June of 2010, the Green Bay Botanical Garden was named an American Hosta Society Display Garden. A plaque noting this honor is proudly displayed in the Green & Gold’s Hosta Garden.

In 2014 the Green & Gold Hosta Society of Northeastern Wisconsin hosted the Midwest Regional Hosta Society annual convention. Then in 2019 they hosted the National Hosta Society National Convention.

in 2018 the Green Bay Botanical Garden, awarded their Founders Award to the Green & Gold Hosta Society of Northeastern Wisconsin. The award is given to volunteer groups that exemplify hard work and dedication, a love of horticulture, and a desire to provide the community with a place for learning, enjoyment, celebration, solace and remembrance.

The Green & Gold annual meeting is in April, where members come together to share gardening tales and plans for the coming year. Society business and plans for the coming year are discussed with the membership. Members can also add to their hosta collection by taking advantage of special club prices offered to Hosta Clubs.

As part of their goal to share gardening ideas, the Green &
Gold plans 3 Chit Chats for the summer months. Chit Chats are held on a weekday evening at a member’s garden from 6 to 8. The first Chit Chat of the year in June is also their annual early summer plant sale.

In addition to the 3 Chit Chats, the Green & Gold sponsors a bus trip to visit gardens outside the Green Bay area. Sometimes the trips are relatively close (Oshkosh area one year) and other times they wander a little further.

In the fall of the year, the Green & Gold have another plant
sale. This plant sale is a joint plant sale with the Bay Area Daylily Buds and is held at Larry's Bellevue Gardens the weekend after Labor Day.
